If you are not already riding Northstar, consider starting today. A recent report from the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) shows the average resident in Minneapolis can save $824 dollars per month by using public transportation. That’s more than $9,884 per household annually – more than the typical family spends on groceries each year. You, too, can reap the benefits of public transit by riding the Northstar Line and its connecting services.

Northstar Train schedules & How to ride

Northstar trains are operated by Metro Transit. Schedule and how to ride information can be found by visiting Northstar trains make six scheduled stops at each station on weekday mornings, and six stops on weekday afternoons/evenings between Big Lake and downtown Minneapolis. Trains also provide weekend and some special event service. Northstar is part of a larger, regional transit system that extends from Bloomington to St. Cloud and surrounding areas of the state. The system includes Metro Transit bus and light rail service and other coach and shuttle service.


Northstar Link Coach Bus
The Northstar Link, operated by St. Cloud Metro Bus, provides commuter coach service between East St. Cloud and the Northstar Commuter Rail station in Big Lake. This service includes stops in Becker and East St. Cloud, as well as the St. Cloud State University campus and other St. Cloud locations.

Link service in both directions is timed with Northstar weekday and weekend trains. It offers passengers a convenient link between Northstar Commuter Rail service and the park-and-ride lots at Highway 10 and Lincoln Avenue in St. Cloud and at the Becker city parking lot north of Highway 10 at the intersection of 1st St. NE and Willow St. In addition, the Northstar Link provides special service for select Minnesota Twins games. The Northstar Line is an important link to a much broader transit network in the metro area and Central Minnesota. Through shuttle services and the extensive Metro Transit and St. Cloud Metro Bus networks, Northstar trains connect you to where you need to go -- whether you are traveling from the St. Cloud area to the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport or other locations across the region.

For your convenience, Metro Transit provides overnight parking in designated park-and-ride spaces at the Big Lake, Elk River, Anoka, Coon Rapids-Riverdale and Fridley stations. The designated spaces are available for overnight parking for as many as seven consecutive days. Signs mark the overnight parking spots. Overnight parking also is available at the Northstar Link Commuter Bus station in St. Cloud, provided by St. Cloud Metro Bus.


Check with your employer and educational institutions near the Northstar Line to inquire about shuttle services in the area, or to let them know it’s a service you would use.
